Avalore Dump Week 18
"Salmon united" Edition
We’re nearing the holiday season and the timeline is abuzz with Bears and Salmon. I for one am just happy to have things to do again! Feels like nothing has really happened since Pointsmarket went down, but having a fun new project has really kept the vibes alive recently. Things were looking grim! Let’s do the news.
Bear or Salmon?
Before we get started here let me just put a little disclaimer. The Bears and Salmon team reached out to me a while ago and I’ve taken an advisory role in the project. Mostly helping brainstorm, looking over spreadsheets, making sure the devs are alive, that kind of thing. Because of this, I may have some slight bias towards their decisions because I helped with them. Sorry!
Also for those who fear the big bad Deep Waitor Studios menace, please rest assured I am but a small part of the team. For all intents and purposes this is not a DWS project. We are not launching it and we did not review applications. I’m on honeymoon! Who has time for that??
Anyway, it was revealed that the final phase of the presale would be an iteration of the prisoner’s dilemma. All applicants were matched with someone else and given the choice of Bear or Salmon. Players had 48 hours to discuss in public about which option they were going to pick, which mainly meant trying to figure out if you could trust your partner to pick Salmon.
Some people were even caught photoshopping images in order to try and convince their partner to pick Salmon! Thankfully, the French have a very astute eye and can spot fakes easily. Nice try!
As we neared the lock-in phase, there were too many plot points to cover in this newsletter (I’m late for an all-inclusive dinner) but I will try to speedrun some of them.
Vitagliano didn’t feel like playing by the rules (classic Lucius move) and eventually withdrew from the game.
The French vendetta against Goose continues. Goose has DEFINITELY done weird stuff, let the record show. Don’t let him beat these allegations.
Ruggers get matched up against each other and fight about it. Looks like Innkeeper tried to be an honorable Salmon but got eaten.
Someone found a way to view people’s choices before lock-in (always be careful with auth stuff, folks!) and caught his partner picking bear. The bear then took to the timeline to complain. Should have just picked salmon! You get what you deserve!
Choices Revealed!
After a few days, the choices were finally revealed and we had another full wave of juicy, juicy drama. More rapid fire!
Some really bad luck in the battle between D Scramble and CosmicBill (Bill was the trekker).
We stan our self-aware king! Gotta love a bear who owns what he’s done. Actually you don’t. Fuck the bears.
This greedy asshole chose bear! Fuck him! I chose bear too, but I’m just a victim here!
The Final Psyop (or is it?)
Now that the pair choices were revealed, it was time to collect presale money. The team had some more tricks up their sleeve when showing the final allocation sizes:
Salmon-Salmon winners would actually have the LARGEST allocation
Bear vs Salmon winners would have a slightly smaller allocation and have to pay more for it (fuck the bears)
Bear vs Bear gamers get nothing (also fuck the bears)
Eaten Salmon get 60% of an allocation at the Salmon valuation (“you’re a good person” award)
This of course led to another wave of fun posts. Let’s breeze through again!
I’m not really sure what he’s getting at? Obviously his pair chose bear, not sure why that’s a question. And does he not realize that eaten salmon still got a good allocation and good price? How does this all confirm that it was a setup? Just so many questions here, but best not to try and get inside a mind like this one.
I don’t really know what happened here, but the transition from “I won’t call out this project directly” to “This is me calling out bears_salmon and giga” in the same Twitter post is hilarious. I’m sure they make lots of valid arguments.
This one probably takes the cake. Dropping the bear selection on someone only to turn around and tell them you can’t afford the (13 avax!) allocation is true insanity.
All in all, this was an incredibly fun week on the timeline. Shoutout to the Bears and Salmon team for running the game. This was a very cool thing to do, and I’m sure the people who came up with it are incredibly handsome.
Sorry this week was heavily (only) Bears and Salmon related! Also of note this week was TR’s hostile takeover of Nochillios and rebrand to be more BIPOC+ friendly. I was going to write about it but the article is already long and I’m on vacation! I’m not going to edit it, so if you made it this far congrats and I’m sorry. I shouldn’t even be writing this though! That’s how much I love you, dear reader.
